Can You Ask Customers for Google Reviews? What Google Allows

Yes. Google allows businesses to ask customers to leave reviews. It encourages businesses to do so, and gives you a link to share. What it does not allow is paying for reviews, rewarding them or filtering who you ask.

What is allowed

  • Asking customers in person, on a printed card, by message or by email.
  • Sharing your review link or QR code, including through an NFC card.
  • Replying to reviews, good and bad.
  • Asking everyone, after a good or bad experience alike.

What is not allowed

Google’s policies on fake engagement and incentives say that reviews must reflect a real experience and must not be bought or rewarded. In practice:

  • No rewards. Do not offer discounts, free items or entry to a draw in exchange for a review, even for an honest one.
  • No review gating. Do not ask only happy customers, or send unhappy customers somewhere else so that only good reviews reach Google.
  • No fake or paid reviews, and no reviews from staff, owners or relatives.
  • No reviews on behalf of a customer, such as from a device in your shop.

Reviews that break the rules can be removed, and repeated breaches can affect your profile. Policies change, so check the current wording in Google’s own help pages.

How to ask well

  • Ask at the right moment, when the customer has just had a good experience: at the till, at checkout or when the order arrives.
  • Keep it short: “If you enjoyed it, we would love a quick review. Tap your phone on the card.”
  • Make it one tap. An NFC review card opens the Google review form directly, which is the point of having one.
  • Say thank you, and reply to the review afterwards.
  • Do not argue with a negative review. Reply politely and offer to fix the problem.

Is a review card allowed?

Yes. A card or standee that opens your Google review page is just a convenient way to share your link. It does not break any rule, as long as you ask everyone and offer nothing in return. See how to get more Google reviews in Pakistan and how to find your Google review link.
